... HTML.3.1
People really should edit raw HTML instead of using fancy, complex, WYSIWYG editors for HTML which often produce conceptualy erroneous HTML (like embedded $<$BR$>$ tags). HTML is so simple that it's easier to edit the raw HTML than to learn to use a special editor. Also, human-edited HTML files are small & transmit quickly. I should write a whole article to convince people of all this.

Perl: Never before has a language so cryptic, so kludged, & such an eye-sore been so damned useful.

With a modern cpio, this step wouldn't be necessary. Also, it might not be necessary if I found the right command line options. As it is, the old cpio on Vex, as I know how to invoke it, does not overwrite existing files under any circumstances & does not warn when it is not over-writing an existing file. It's safest to remove the directory entirely before extracting the archive.

To be a real LATEX command, I had to preceed it with a backslash & to wrap the ``html'' argument in braces, of course. When I do that now, even with escaping the backslash & the braces so they should print literally, LATEX can handle it fine, but LATEX2HTML goes into an endless loop.
